There's no actual rationale given for why the choices are given. But if I were to guess, multiplayer is what put Warcraft on the list. The list doesn't go for "first" - SMB3 is on there to represent platformers - so I assume it goes for "most prominent/culture changing." In that case, even though Dune II is the first to lay out the foundations that Warcraft would build on, Warcraft is the first prominent example of having multiplayer be a critical part of the RTS experience.

I bet someone could scrounge up an argument that even outside of space sims, Star Raiders sets the first major watermark of combat flight games as a whole. But not only is limiting it to 10 absurd to begin with, but if we're just going by "genres still vital today", Spacewar shouldn't be there either. (That said, I'd put Xevious instead of Space Invaders for shmups in terms of setting standards that still carry to today.)

What was VR like before 2000?
Virtual Boy doesn't count.

(pic related is from 1994, iirc)

From 1995, iirc. I have the feeling that the computer industry runs long enough now that it starts to repeat itself.
