Entirely non facetiously, Lunar 2. It is a better version of Lunar. The same charm is there, but the story is better, the characters are better, bosses are better, everything.

If you liked Lunar but though it could have been a bit better, Lunar 2 is that game.

I recommend the Sega CD version. I played both versions around the same time, and the Sega CD version has better artwork and better pacing. Playstation version has budget anime cutscenes (bad art, low detail), whereas the Sega CD version has animated pixel art cutscenes that look great. Because there's no random encounters in the Playstation version, it feels rushed, and you won't get attached to characters like Lucia, because you won't be doing long dungeons with her. Playstation version isn't terrible, but if you choose it you'll probably wonder why I recommended it.

What does watching anime have to do with RPGs? Unless you're a huge Lodoss fan or something. Anyways, I recommend the Lunar games. Straight forward, anime inspired and easy enough that they don't require grinding and in depth strategy but complex enough to not be just attacking over and over the whole time.

Sega CD versions are preferable but PS is decent.

Otherwise Pokemon is a good bet. I recommend Gold/Silver.

I bought two back in the day. It was a neat system, but I wouldn't recommend buying one physically now unless you're really into collecting. The only things really worth playing are like Popful Mail and Flink that will now cost you far more than the system itself. If you like JRPGs though it has some quite neat ones.

You could go the rout of burning games for it, but then you may as well just emulate and bypass all that bullshit.

I got a paper rout just so I could buy a Sega CD. No regrets at all.

Working Designs thread? What titles do you think about when you hear this company. Lunar 1, Lunar 2 and Dragonforce were beloved in my house.

I only do it if I actually like the game in question and if it has some kind of personal sentimental significance

I paid a fair bit to get a copy of Lunar EB. I know it's a game I enjoyed greatly and I had a lot of fond memories attached to it

I really can't understand how people can drop over a hundred on games the never played just because the internet told them it was good and they want to be retro collectors

It's exciting, but always leads to disappointment in the end in my experience. You build up to fight the side boss cause it's crazy hard, you win and get something awesome. But now usually all that's left is the final boss who's a pushover by comparison, especially with the XP and loot you got from the side boss.

The only game that did this right in my thinking was Lunar 2 where the optional dungeons and bosses are in the epilogue after having beaten back the main enemy of the game.
