I mean, entertainment in general that isn't sports was always considered "for losers". Even people who are too much into books or movies are considered losers.
Of course anime is no exception, but in the 90s, anime was seen as very edgy, alternative, and cool. That's because most people's first exposure to anime were things like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and weird ass 80s OVAs with lots of gore and mature themes/imagery.
So, for a while, anime or "japanimation" was considered edge-cutting in the west, and it wasn't popular enough to have backlash (other than older comics/star trek nerds seething that this weird japanese animation was taking over interest at comic cons with younger people).
It wasn't until anime in the west settled in the 2000s that it started to get an actual backlash, and eventually the word "weeaboo" appeared, mutating from wapanese.
Think of it this way: back then, the original "weeaboos" (ie, people who "want to be japanese", or who have an obsession with japanese culture) were mostly martial artists like Steven Seagal, not comic/animation lovers.
