If we're talking about what's better to use, then it's cartridges for me, faster and no scratches to have to deal with... but, if we're talking about it in the context of the 90's and what made sense to use then, it was CDs, this stuff's cyclical, now disks are at a low point, but maybe in the future they manage to store way more data than all of the others again, and we go back to using them.

It made sense that PS1 and Saturn used them, a lot more than N64 using cartridges, but now I'm glad the Switch uses them over the PS5's disks, I prefer it, but disks have their place and history.

Sonic the Hedgehog on SEGA Mega Drive.
It's how it started, so it's appropriate that's how it should end aswell, hopefully with a 100% 1CC that I've only gotten once before. It's still my all time favorite video game, and I don't see myself going out with a bang without it being this one.

Adding to what (>>10505241) has said, it's not like saving was the only way to keep progress, we've had passwords for way longer, and yet there were tons of titles that didn't even have those, which makes it obvious that for many it was not only technical, but also a design decision, I mean, Sonic's pictured in your OP, a SEGA IP, the arcade direction, with game overs, is very clear.

In Sonic 1, for example, where there wasn't any save system or password system, if you add any of those... it becomes quite braindead, you'll go and beat if for sure, which would be bland...

Genesis for the simple fact of going for a proper hard case while the US standard was cardboard, I loved these cases quite a lot, they felt premium and similar to a lot of VHS cases I had at the time, which felt appropriate since a lot of cartridges I had were based on films I had a VHS of, it was so appropriate and cozy, being a kid growing up with a Genesis is something I'm very grateful for.

I miss colorful and detailed manuals by the way, while hard cases have become a standard, it's a shame that a lot of the SOVL we used to have is now lost, when there even is a disk to buy really.

>ITT: Unpopular retro opinions
Sonic was always good.
It seems this is an unpopular opinion nowadays, so here you go.
While we're on the topic of Sonic, I prefer the 8-Bit platformers to the 16-Bit ones for some reason, especially Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, it was just better to have to look for the emeralds instead of playing through special stages to get them, and the simplicity of it all was charming.

I just started Sonic 1, is it just me or do the levels kind of suck?
