I was wondering what everyone here thought about the use of a guide when playing a video game. With recent years I feel like they've lost popularity, especially with anything new coming out, because nowadays everything is much longer and filled with content in an attempt to justify the price tag, usually people just watch videos, but for retro it was more simple to make because a lot of the classics we cherish are under an hour long anyways.

Either way, I don't know if I'm alone in this, but I love the feeling of reading an in depth guide on GameFAQs for a title that I'm fond of, or that I'm currently playing. Yes, I know many say that it's cheating or that it takes away from the experience and/or the legitimacy of the run, and that's why I made the thread in a way, to hear everyone's thoughts, but I find them fun, like going on a treasure hunt with your trusty old map leading the way, I like the feeling.

How do you personally prefer to read through and/or use guides for your playthroughs? Do you even use them at all? When/If you do, is it under certain conditions, like getting stuck for too long or when playing stops being enjoyable? Are there any titles you believe require a guide to be enjoyable at all, or that are more fun than usual with one? Do you think it's cheating to use one and/or that it makes a run not legit? I'm curious to see your views, /vr/.

Title says it all really, what's your perspective on the use of guides to beat a game either normally or 100%?

Is it ever ok? Does it make a playthrough not "legit"? Does it make it so every future playthrough is also not "legit"? Do you make rules for yourself when it comes to using them?

Lots of people hated the puzzles which is how gamefaqs was born.
