Extra Mario Bros. is one of the best rom hacks ever made. It's a total bitch to learn since it's a Metroid/SMB hybrid that expects you to be decent at both, but the payoff is huge.

Super Mario Unlimited seems pretty good if you want something more vanilla.

You probably should have broadened your scope. Rom hack threads can be kind of sparse, even without being limited to Mario.

Anyway, Extra Mario Bros. is one of my favorite hacks of all time. It's not for the faint of heart, though, since it's as dangerous as The Lost Levels and trickier to navigate than Metroid.

Also I'd like to point out that with Southbird's disassembly and NoDice making an elaborate Super Mario Bros. 3 hack is easier than ever.
