/vr/ - Retro Games

They're all pretty good, can't decide between 2 and 3.

I think best is either II or III. Haven't played IV though.
New Adventure Island on PC Engine is pretty good but it's like a remake of the first one with better graphics (and way easier).
Super Adventure Island 1 is slower paced (doesn't have a run button) and generally considered a step back from the NES sequels, but the comfy graphics and Yuzo Koshiro music gets it some points.
Super 2 is more of an adventure game, more similar to the Wonder Boy sequels, and it's pretty good too.

I think what makes the games good is that they don't try hard to be anything else than what they are: great plafromers.
There's no gimmick or trick here, it's just plain fun platforming. Good controls, good level design, and all accompanied with colorful graphics and great chiptunes.
It's hard to dislike the AI games if you like platformers.

Adventure Island games are great platformers. They were popular back in the day.
Wonder Boy 1 on the arcade was always popular, a classic, girls always liked it for some reason, and it was seen as a "girl game".
Even though I had a Genesis growing up, I just never came across the other Wonder Boy games. I played III and IV on Genesis later and they were great.
Adventure Island II, III, IV are all amazing games, must play.
New Adventure Island on PC Engine is a nice remake of the original, same simplicity with the timeless gameplay and a visual upgrade.
I have yet to play the SNES games, but I love the soundtrack of the first one (by Yuzo Koshiro) and the visuals too. The 2nd one seems to be really good, and more similar to the later Wonder Boy games.

III might be my favorite in the series, good taste. And yes, these games could get pretty challenging.
