While I love the anime cheese of the cutscenes and redbook audio, and while there are doubtless hard hitters (Falcom, Riot/Renovation*, NEC Avenue, Konami), I think there is usually a bit more variety on the HuCard format.

I go back and forth. I sometimes feel like there was more interest and development by major studios during the HuCard phase - though it should be noted that Hudson had always planned a CD addon from day 1; they just needed that install base first to raise the money.

But anyhow during that period you had Taito, Namco, IREM, and other devs making a lot of standout games and ports. AND you had a lot of smaller studios making interesting one-offs like Ankoku Densetsu, Moto Roader or Gomola Speed, many of which do not have analogues on the CD unit.

Though its worth saying just how many amazing things were done thanks to that CD unit. Some of those rpgs are simply incredible: M&M3, Anearth Fantasy Stories, Emerald Dragon, Xanadu II - they really make you feel the CD Rom was being put to heavy use in the right ways. To say nothing of Gradius II, or Image Fight II.

*I only say this half-jokingly. The epitome of 5/10 developers!
