I honestly never understood the hate for Tidus. He's arguably the first (and only) FF protagonist who acts somewhat like a real person, with a broad range of emotions and character flaws, yet people only ever meme the hell out of the laughing scene and completely miss the point of it and Tidus himself.

DISC 2
6.Second Opening scene
This is where disc 2 starts and it’s where a lot of jrpgs try to mix things up, but it’s also where they can become convoluted.
Some will change the cast entirely, or skip forward or back in time, or just start shortly after we left off in disc 1.

7.Regrouping(Secondary Exposition)
The party has been weakened and this section is spent showing how each of the key characters of the party and maybe some of the factions involved in the plot have been affected by the events at the end of the last disc.
The player’s battle strength is weakened, equipment is lost permanently, party members could be dead or injured and combat might become harder if the player is weak in an area with strong enemies.
The player has to re-embark to either train, or find lost or new party members.
Note:Also the player and cast may come upon new knowledge they didn’t have prior and realize that the scope of the journey has now expanded or that the goal has changed(usually to the point where they have to save the world)

8.Path to Recovery
The player and party will somehow begin to recover from their losses, this usually involves them seeking out more powerful members, some kind of ancient artifact, knowledge or another macguffin to give them an advantage against the enemy.
While doing this the party members who haven’t been developed will often get the second half of the character development if any.
The world will probably open up more to the player granting them new equipments and grinding areas as well. Boss battles to deal with the main antagonist’s pawns and side antagonists occur.
If the game has multiple usable airships or other vehicles the final one is usually acquired by this point.

I've always played rpgs buy never really had an in depth understanding of their gameplay mechanics and conventions. I'm trying to get a better grasp of things like classes and strategy and how rpgs just work in general.
what are some games I can look at to pickup and research the fundentals?

This sums it up well. People hate it for everything BUT the game itself. For one thing it had a wholly negative effect on Square going forward with the endless spin-offs, the bastardized versions of the characters appearing in other series', the movie..it naturally led to those who missed out assuming things like Cloud being an twink emo and Sephiroth being a demon edgelord with no motive being part of the package.

If you can play the game in that 1997 bubble, you'll have a really good time. This problem will get even worse when the remake comes out and butchers everything, I'm sure.

You'll hear much made about it being "babby's first JRPG" but that applies to the rest of the franchise too, with the only exception being IX since nobody played that back then. Before I first played it a few years ago I expected it to be something akin VIII; nothing more than an overlong fart of melodrama, angst and development so predictable even a child should see coming miles away, not to mention a ridiculously contrived and contradictory plot that took itself way too seriously. I was quite surprised at how goofy and silly a lot of the game was especially in the first disc, and that unlike its spinoffs/sequels didn't take itself more seriously than terminal cancer and knew when to cut loose and have fun with itself. I can't speak for everyone but I really liked the story and characters, the only possible exception being Sephiroth who was kinda lame as a villain. I also really liked the gameplay especially the materia system, the only real problem I had was that it was a bit too on the easy side. I'll admit I haven't played the whole series (I still have to play the SNES games) but out of the ones I have played (VII-XIII) I thought VII had overall the best of both worlds.

It's a pretty good game that is overrated by nostalgiatards and underage weeaboos who probably never even touched the game. I liked the story, characters and music much more than most FF games, and the materia system was fun, but the combat itself was barebones "spam O to win" schlock. I wish they expanded on the gritty dystopian atmosphere Midgar had, because after you leave the city it pretty much grinds to a halt and becomes a bog-standard fantasy setting. Maybe they could do that with the remake, or they'll more than likely just fuck it up and pander to the Advent Children crowd like they have been doing for the past decade.
