SNES was godly for its time. Most of its best games became obsolete by their sequels except for Super Metroid and megaman x. Still a great console though, it was the curtain call for spritework on home consoles.

Most of it was inevitable with the natural evolution of things. Games were always going to evolve from pixels, to polygons, and next in the coming future VR, which will make standard Television-and-console-and-controller games irrelevant. Ever since the very start vidya has been an exercise in creating virtual worlds to escape to, and they wont stop evolving until we simply create our own perfect, unmistakable copy worlds of our own to escape into.

That said I feel the terrible political and economic climate of this era shares some of the blame for our current state of things. 2007-2008 sunk our progression into the darkest possible timeline, with shit like social media and micro transactions dragging gaming down with it. But plenty of the things that ancient Usenet poster was crying about is still available if not moreso today. Guides evolved to longplays, games get OSTs released on top of actual concerts for video game music, and at least 10 other new genres appeared since 1993 when their only genres were beat em up, shmup, doom clone or platformer.
