The 3D remake outright removed it, but the area now has a Skeleton Gunman and Sound Item No.30 in a candle. It might not even be a door. Whatever it is, it was deemed vestigial for the final game. It may just be the game designers forgetting for a moment to keep the game balanced around Richter's moveset, since there's no other Maria-exclusive area in the game, or it could've been a test graphic for the ghost portrait snuck in as an in-joke.
Do we know if any of the Rondo devs are active on social media? There's that musician at >>10350828, but that's a long shot. (And there are TCRF lurkers at /vr/ so I half-expect >>10347509's mag scan to be uploaded soon, hurry and credit /vr/anon before someone else takes credit in their hroken system.)
And if you want more Castlevania series dev info, TV Tropes got surprisingly good at compiling much of it somewhere in their Trivia or YMMV sections. Their "What Could Have Beens" can be goldmines sometimes.
