Dedication and patience, okay. Skill? Eh... I think video games are made so that anyone can beat them, with enough dedication. It's not some genre made for the chosen ones of gaming or something, shmups were one of the most popular arcade genres, all throughout the 1980s since Space Invaders came out in '79. This genre was one of the most played by what you'd nowadays call "normies".

The problem with the shmup fanbase is that it's an already niche scene by now, and truth be told, a majority of today's shmup fanbase comes from Touhou. Like it or not. I don't personally like touhou and I'm not crazy for danmaku in general, but credit goes where it's due. Fans of games and series like Darius, Gradius, R-Type and many other konami/taito/irem shooters are shrinking, more niche games from devs like Treasure, Cave, Raizing, Toaplan, etc have even less fans around.
Some people around here say Ikaruga and Radiant are overrated by normies, but truth is, in this day and age, it's more likely a normie will know about Touhou (even if through some mix of Bad Apple) than either of Treasure's vertis.

Irem were kings of body horror. Many of their shmups rely on gory, misshapen flesh imagery.

X-Multiply literally takes place inside someone's diseased body and features parasitic aliens of all shapes and sizes, all grotesque, as enemies.

I mean, look at this shit. That's fucking disgusting. And I love it. I fucking love it.

Body horror is best horror. Being made of flesh is inherently terrifying.
