Remember when X360/PS3 came out and every AAA game there became gray and brown and realistic? PC's were doing this style since 1996.
Japan was still all about blue skies in 1999 but american devs were full grunge and gothic and chose realism and grit over style every time.

That would be the case if every port and emulator were of equal quality and had the same features but that's not the case.
For example, it's generally better to emulate GameCube ports of 6th gen games because Dolphin is much more optimized, accurate and compatible than PS2 or Xbox emulators. On the other hand, Xbox generally is the way to go for real hardware because it generally looks nicer and smoother. And PS2 copies are easier to find and sometimes more optimized too due to being the main development target. So it varies from case to case and there are extra variables to consider other than personal preference.
