Man, the NES sure had a decent palette.
Too bad they could only use four colors per sprite, though.

>the NES palette is actually quite terrible as far as game palettes go. The visible color merges are blocky and uneven, there isn't a good yellow, the gray scale is terrible, and there are ten color entries wasted on black.
>ten color entries wasted on black.
Why?

They could've just as easily assigned the white/yellow palette to his hat. Wouldn't look good given how few colors the NES palette has, and especially given Wario's color makeup. Was it possible to make Wario look accurate? Most certainly. How accurate could he look? Not very accurate, especially in a complicated, non-square pose like this.

Dunno if this is the right place to ask, but whatever.

I'm trying to make some NES-style pixel art for a game I'm working on, and I want it to be as authentic as possible. What are some basic 'rules' for designing sprites/backgrounds/etc. for NES games? In other words, if I wanted to actually make an NES game Just an example, I'm not doing any homebrew, what limitations would I be working with?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know this is more fitting for AGDG, but I figured you guys would know how the NES worked better than they did.

Is this really every color possible on the NES?
