It's not you, anon, smithing is fun but tempering may be the most inexplicably convoluted system ever designed for any game.

Most items do absolutely nothing, if something does happen it doesn't tell you what, you have to exit the forge and go though like four different menus to find some sign anything happened, which still only works if you remember what the stats were before and calculate the change yourself. And when and if you do find something that has an effect it can be negative. Or if you get a positive effect you can accidentally negate it later if you try anything else. The game basically punishes you for deviating from a formula that you are never given and which is highly redundant and almost impossible to puzzle out with trial and error. As you said, you can read a guide that explicitly lays things out and still walk away scratching your head.

Whoever came up with this was a full-blown autist and I'm not even memeing, there's no practical reason for it to be this fubar, it's the product of a mind incapable of thinking normally.To be honest it's really just not worth the grief, the game is piss easy and grinding for the excessive amounts of materials is no fun. Make quality Golems and raise good pets and you don't even need forging.
