Bangai-O.
Shmup fans know this game for its Dreamcast version, but it was actually a N64 game originally, part of Treasure's trio on N64 (Mischief Makers, Sin and Punishment, and this).
It plays as a freeroam shmup, where you have to solve different kind of challenges in order to advance, and every level has a boss. The gameplay consist on destroying enemies, gathering fruit (actually, the story of the game is a bit bizarre and surreal, as with most treasure games), and trying to get the higher possible score. Gameplay features a combo system, and you can release up to 100 missiles at once on screen, but you can actually control how many missiles do you aproximately want to launch.
The difference between the DC and N64 version is the way you level up, in N64 is by combos, and on DC is by gathering fruit. Some people prefer one or the other, I think the DC version is a bit easier, connecting combos can be a bit frustrating sometimes.. so I guess this is like "hard mode", oh also there was some other changes because you can actually change between the main male character, and his sister, you will need to do this because different kind of obstacles or enemies can only be hit with one kind of bullet (hello, Ikaruga's proto idea?).
Also graphics and music are of course updated on the DC version... but if you appreciate the more retro 16bit-like graphics and sound, then you will also enjoy this.
The controls are also really cool, you can use the d-pad and the c-buttons as a double d-pad thing, something like the virtual boy, or you can use the d-pad to move and the 3d stick to shoot, they did this with trying to achieve an "arcade-like" kinda feel I guess.

Anyway yeah, sorry for the TL;DR I really like this game.

I love Bangai-O, it's like a homage to all these fuckawesome 80s anime mecha shows with a gorillion missiles flying shit up in every direction.
I reccommend experiencing the N64 version, the game was built to be played with the N64 controller in mind (as usual with Treasure, they ALWAYS are very aware on how to make a game work perfectly with the controller of the system they're developing for), and the combo system is arguably more challenging than the point system from the DC ver. Both are good anyway and worth a try.
