Gaming as it is today is ultimately a product of the 90's where it (I would say mostly due to the playstation) stopped being solely for children and became targeted at young adults and has grown since then. During the 70's and 80's gaming was truly the domain of people with the disposable money or - more likely imo - people who were the true tech nerds whom were invested into computers due to education and wished to explore computing in every way they could. In my corner of the world the true bedroom coder revolution took place in the 80's and those people where the ones making commercial games in the 90's to early 2k.
