Is Heretic really not great or I don't get something about it? Barely made myself to complete first episode, and that's using Wayfarer's Tome because default weapons suck. Still, on paper combat is similar to Doom 1 with all straight fireball throwing folks, and I love D1's gameplay, but in Heretic it feels unengaging at all. Maybe lack of hitscan enemies is the reason for that, dunno.
