Finished this with a friend over online a while ago. We only beat it because I came up with the strategy where, when the ball started with us, the CPU ally passed the ball to me as player 2 (which it always does in a fixed manner), I'd wait a second for player 1 to charge up his special, pass to him and we'd have a guaranteed super kick usually leading to an instant goal.

I beat this with a bro recently, it's probably the most fun I'll ever have with a ballsy kicky game. We only beat the last team because I came up with a strategy where when we'd start with the ball, he'd start charging his special as soon as possible and I'd pass to him instantly (the CPU always passes to player 2), leading to a guaranteed super kick which would usually lead to a free goal.
