Because half life and halo ruined the fps genre. The 00s and mid 10s were a wasteland for shooters, thank god the boomer shooter revival started in the wake of doom 2016 and DUSK. Eternal was the first time I've had fun with a triple A in years. It's telling that nu-/v/ considers the fact that it's too "videogame-y" to be a downside.
Also you have to factor in that doom has almost 30 years of modding behind it at this point, you could play a new WAD every day and die of old age before you ran out.

Got the itch to play through Quake 1 again since I haven't played it in like 20 years, so I wanted a source port for it but there are so many. Came here since I knew this thread would have the info I need with no bullshit.
