What exactly does the empire "do"? I know they're just supposed to be this ambiguous militaristic evil guys in a fantasy space film, but what do they do? Surely burning and bullying people is not exactly a nice thing, but considering how rough and brutal the galaxy is, I can't really tell what the empire is about.
For most part the empire are the bad guys because they look like what we assume bad guys to look like, and then we just assume that they're the bad guys.
I probably shouldn't think Star Wars this deeply, it's just red vs blue.

Now, games where you can play as bad guy? In Deus Ex you can't really *be* the bad guy thanks to the streamlined story progression that will always make you the goodie, but you can be real dickhead while being a good guy. Thanks to the dialogue options and freedom of choice, you just murder everyone in your way (including children!) and then shrug it off by a simple empty promise to never to do it again. You're then moved to your next assignment, and you proceed with your murderous ways like the sick dickhead you are.
I think it actually makes Denton even more villainish that everybody considers him a good guy in the end even though you literally slay your way through waves of hobos and children.

Did the ominous Helios-ending imply that Helios-Denton hybrid is evil, and that Helios tricked Denton to release it? Or was it intentionally made to seem ominous because the earlier stuff convinced the player that Denton was the ultimate neutral good guy, and together with Helios he could be the neutral machine god?
