There's not much depth to it, unlike a conventional Tamagotchi it can't die, it can just "run away" if left unattended for too long, but that's just a "minimum happiness" state which you can easily recover from.

The entire depth of the toy can be explained on one page.
Ironically, the toy wouldn't be legal to make these days due to the simulated gambling with a slots minigame.

The sequel device, the Pokémon Pikachu 2 GS, had significantly more features, a color display, and very significantly an IR communicator that would let it send watts over to Pokémon Gold and Silver, when played on a Game Boy Color with its own IR sensor port.
This concept would be revived with the Poké Walker for Heart Gold and Soul Silver, which was one of the best things about that game.

/vp/ sucks so I'll ask here: how was Mystery Gift like in GSC? I never used it because I don't have a GBC, just a GB, so I don't know.

Bulbapedia has info but it may not be 100% accurate: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Mystery_Gift#Generation_II
