What Windows 98 games do you recommend from this service to look into? What are their best sale prices and when do they happen? I am currently looking around for a cheap computer case and I should be ready to go by this time next year, I hope they survive until then.

That's great news, as I want to emulate even on the J-Win98SE machine. Do you happen to know which particular emulators would support utput to a standard CRT TV via S-video? I am still trying to find the last version of MAME32 that will run on the OS.

I don't think Audigy ZS2 go for much, it was what I had laying around and I think it supports Win98. One anon pointed me out to a modified Audigy 1 driver which may work with Audigy 2: https://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?fileid=1383&menustate=0

This is beautiful. I am jealous and want one.

This is where I am hung up with on my 98 build, the storage solution. It seems 98SE only will do a 128GB HDD. I have a SATA to IDE bridge and a 1TB Segate Firecuda for speed, but I think that could be wasteful. That Phil video >>5372791 is using a 120GB SSD, and I have one of those, but doesn't it need trim support or something for 98? I am hoping to get closer to finishing the build with either this year or next year's tax return.

I have gotten really close now to putting all the pieces together for my J-Win98SE build. I am still a bit hung up on a few pieces. Such as trying to figure out if using Seatools to limit a 1TB Firecuda to the acceptable 128GB HDD Win98 accepts, will that apply if I use 2 HDDs that they both have to be limited to 128GBs? Or would a 2nd HDD be unacceptable? I had considered maybe the possibility to partition 128GB to J-Win98SE, and maybe set up the remained for the 1TB to XP, but there's no guarantee that won't cause issues. As for sound, I just dug out an old AudgyZS2, but it seems like I should be hunting down a Live! card instead? As you can see, I only have PCI as well, and no ISA slots.

Where can I get this changed driver to get an Audigy2 to register?

I am jealous of the Voodoo2s. Those have gotten prohibitively expensive now, so I opted to get a GeForce 6800 for my build, and settle on missing out on Glide.

I too love Yu-No and Doukyuusei. It is nostalgic playing Season of the Sakura and the Megatech games. I vaguely remember Isaku (is that the haunted/creep house game?). I remember liking the pixel art versions of games a bit more than the full 256-color+ Windows remakes of a lot of these Elf and TGL visual novel games. Know of a good place I can download some of these visual novels again?

I am getting ever closer to starting the J-WIn98SE machine, just ordered a floppy emulator in anticipation of my next paycheck next week. Just need cables, hard drives, SATA to IDE adapters, and a case. Already got my Sentimental Graffiti, Tokimeki Memorial, etc. desktop accessories ready to enjoy J-WIN and DOS/V.

486s are pretty popular. The DX2-66 were a mainstay that was well used by many. DOS games including some of those early FPS games like Doom and Heretic will run well. I'd say build what suits you best, part of the fun in building your own is the personal touch that makes a computer yours. Having some parts already is a great start. I'm working the opposite way, as I have a 486DX4 and now trying to work on a Pentium 3 machine.

Since I cannot afford much, I'm opting for the 2nd and 3rd best choices to keep the cost manageable. I am opting for a J-Win98SE build primarily for the Japanese PC games, but I hear 98 has some good DOS compatibility as well. I am unsure if the parts I have chosen for the build will fit the bill for DOS. I just got in a Corsair TX550M power supply, so now all I need is a case, cables, hard drives, floppy emulator, and SATA to IDE adapters. I'm slowly saving up for each part.

I liked The Incredible Machine for the old Windows.

I am also building a Windows 98 machine, specifically a J-Win98SE machine, all for my J-Win pleasures. It is true that there are modern methods that may be more efficient, like GoG, but I think part of the joy in having a computer is just making something specifically in the way that you'd want it. For instance, if I can save up, I'd really want to experience using an actual Roland MT-32 for the games I loved. I find putting the things together an enjoyable experience as a side hobby to video games.

However, there were plenty of prebuilt computers, and that could be a good source to to start for inexpensive parts. I used a prebuilt 486DX4-100 as a base for its case, power source, motherboard, and processor. I am currently using its onboard video and a really generic Virba16, but I recently decided to get a Tseng video card and I hope to figure out a Soundblaster card I'd want in the machine to achieve a sound I remember.

The point is, I think part of the joy of computers in general is that you make it yours. You can go about it either way you choose, from scratch or with a prebuilt.

A family member of mine has, a "dead" Gateway 2000 P5-75, with accompanying 17" Trinitron CRT monitor that I will try to salvage for parts (I will use that monitor, and I think it had a true Soundblaster 16), and maybe even start another side build with the leftover parts I have around. Even at stock, I played a lot games on that P5-75, which I base my current builds on: such as the soundblaster music for Princess Maker 2 and Zone 66. You can try to make it not suck by maybe changing some things like upgrades in its RAM, sound, video, controller cards, drives, etc. as I want to.

I got my tax return, and I wanted to try out a J-Win98 build. I have nostalgia for my 286-12/386DX40/486DX4-100 days, and I used my cousin's Pentium for Windows95, but I skipped over Win98, and went straight to Windows 2000 (then XP, to now 7). So any help is appreciated.

I've only gotten these (and a basic CPU cooler not pictured) so far for a J-Win98SE build. What else would you suggest for the build?

I regret throwing out my old computer hardware when I had to move. I did find a couple of DVD drives (ATAPI) that I miraculously didn't throw away, like the one pictured, but I am not sure J Win98SE supports it. I still need a power source, which I am thinking of getting a modern one with some adapters for the old equipment. I read that in Winn98 I shouldn't exceed 125GB HDDs, so I still have to hunt down some 120GB HDDs but are there any modern alternatives, like some compact flash to ATA and programs to partition a couple 120GB drives?

What troubles might I encounter? Such as I heard a Win98 install requires a floppy drive, and I'll have to borrow my 486DX4's floppy drive (but I do not have any more discs), I see there's a floppy emulator, but I do not foresee any need for a floppy drive once it is up and running. Is it possible to go without a floppy drive for the build?

I am going with J-Win98SE for the Win98 games I still surprisingly have, such as Ys Eternal 2, some Evangellion mahjong games, Zwei!!, an alarmingly large amount of Touhou games, and maybe it'll allow some DOS/V games like Princess Maker 2. I hope all the random cheap US Win98 games I surprisingly have would work on such a build too. I missed out on so much, and I have a lot of catching up to do.
