It's underappreciated how cool and influential this game was. It's a very 3D game - that is with a lot of verticality. Compare that to Metal Gear Solid, which is a very 2D game with very minimal 3D elements. Games with a LOT of verticality is common in early 3D games such as Tomb Raider, which wanted to emphazie the 3D. They got phased out later for flatter levels to be easier to get into.

And while the wall hugging was inspired by MGS, I do believe that many elements, such as holding onto ledges were implimented into MGS2.

I strongly suspect that Metal Gear Solid devs played Tenchu, since a lot of the tricks in this game show up in MGS2. Including throwing an item to distract enemies, and scaling railings.
