It was a combination of it being a cheap DVD player and it having perfect PS1 backwards compatibility***.

PS1 already destroyed the competition back in the 90s and gave Sony a strong incumbent advantage. Saturn games didn't work on Dreamcast and N64 cartridges didn't work on GameCube, but every PS1 disc, memory card, controller and accessory worked on PS2.

Extremely easy decision to make. Even with the GameCube and Dreamcast at $99 it still made more sense to buy a PS2 if the family already wanted a DVD player. Not to mention the game lineup itself was demolishing everyone else in 2001.

***Yes I know it isn't technically perfect, but PS1 back compat was perfect in a practical sense for 99% of people

Yeah the PS2 really picked up with the 2001 releases. There was Timesplitters at launch but it's really a soft launch compared to the following year. A few of these like MGS2 weren't exclusive for very long but still

yeah, how are you supposed to compete with pic related? and sega didnt have strong exclusives like nintendo.
at the end of the day, most of the time is all about the games.

Early 3D aged like shit and anything before that with a few exceptions is too simplistic. The PS2 era is the real golden age of video games.
