I made that like 4 years ago as a test for this very idea, I'm not changing it now.

The thing is, if you base you sprites off 3D models, creating normal maps per-rotation is pretty trivial. A world space matcap-style normal material is usually a standard option for most 3D packages.

I guess it's shape is fine really. Might match the color to the weapon slot, or make it the same style as the weapons slot but silver.

I saw it before but didn't consider it a problem. If anything it looked more like anticipation in the animation, so I was like "fuck it".

Your first post was vague, and sounded more like my second frame shouldn't be THERE, it should be HERE or some such.
