I really like Planescape: Torment, one of my favorite games. When I saw this post my first thought was to refute it but when you think about it PS:T fits the bill of "visual novel" perfectly without fitting the genre itself and this is really blowing my mind right now.

It's both, but you should be fine.

It was designed to be a deconstruction of the typical fantasy hero story. While that does include games like baldur's gate, if you're at all familiar with any fantasy rpg then you will be able to appreciate what it's trying to do. If you aren't, then you will still be able to appreciate it for its quality storytelling and weirdness.

Also, i would never recommend anyone suffer their way through baldur's gate 1. That game is shit. The 2nd one is good though. Play torment and if you end up enjoying the gameplay, try out baldur's gate 2 to experience that kind of gameplay turned up to 11.

Btw wisdom is the most important stat for your nameless one. Max that shit out in character creation and make it a priority when leveling. Common online advice will also say you should also do intelligence, but you don't have to if you don't want to make a mage - wisdom gives better and more dialogue options.
