The really annoying thing is that the returning boomerangs are made purely for sports, it's basically aboriginal kite flying. Boomerangs like pic related are the real hunting shit, and they're supposed to fly straight at the target.

If you're going to make something that hits the target and still comes back to the player, just make whatever projectile you want and put magic on it.
