ok thanks for this comment, i debugged it one by one. the culprit is the
"cheap" converter. i have an hdmi-rf one which is way fancier and it outputs in 4:3 properly. the thing is i obviously want to use rca. and the only converter being sold online seems to be this one or a variation thereof, it's not like i can upgrade to anything it seems. dead end?
