I think the FM Towns has a couple very nice ports of Ultima and Wizardry with enhanced soundtracks and voice acting. Definitely a curiosity.

I think a MiSTer build with

>Swappable DVD/Floppy drive bay unless you can find some sweet slim floppy drives
>Rest of free USB ports available somewhere convenient
>SNAC port somewhere convenient with clean adapter cases
>Cartridge adapter that, when filled with an intermediary console-specific cartridge adapter, automatically boots the appropriate core and copies the ROM/SRAM to RAM and periodically saves any updated data to the cart
>Somehow do the same with the DVD/floppy drives
>Hardware toggle switch for appropriate video output resolutions/TATE enable
>Include a THS7374 for 15 KHz S-Video/composite video options

As much as JRPG's are shat on, I do like them a lot. Shin Megami Tensei is my favorite series and I wish I had more time to really sit down and play them all. My current run of Nocturne on hard is really fun. There's something about playing a game where you go into knowing your goal is a demonic eugenics program.
