Halo's good, but you should give Shadow Warrior a try, it's a pretty intense shooter which is a lot of fun.

Besides dual wielding Uzis and blasting enemies to pieces with a grenade launcher or rocket launcher (the latter which can load and fire a rare miniature nuclear warhead to annihilate an entire area, including yourself if you're not really careful), you also have a katana which you can use for slicing enemies in half, with special death animations and all.
There's also a railgun, and you can tear the head off of one of the enemies and carry it around like a weapon, using it to shoot fireballs. There's also tanks and other armed vehicles which you can actually drive and fire.

Have you ever played Corridor 7? Bad PC shooters exist.
Meanwhile consoles had some good shooters back in the day, Zero Tolerance, Goldeneye 007, Powerslave, etc.
