I think it's fucking great.

Although the main mode of playing the game is by freely choosing fields from a field select screen, the unlockable Survival Challenge mode lets you play it like the other games, starting from field 0 and going until game over or an ending, and with only three extra lives. There are a few more backpacks around than there were in the other games, though.
