Circus Charlie on Famicom is one of my all time favorite games.

Circus Charlie is the best pre-SMB platformer.

Platform games are probably the more variated in terms of gameplay:
Prince of Persia, Super Mario Bros., Revenge of Shinobi, Castlevania, Umihara Kawase, Mega Man X, Shatter Hand, Gimmick!, Commander Keen.
All of those games are radically different, some leaning more toward action, others toward puzzle, others toward pure platforming, but overall all from the platformer family of games.
Other genres wish were as diverse as platformers.

Why didn't Konami revisit Circus Charlie?
With 16-bit systems, they could have perfected the obstacle-based platforming, with more crazy stuff and stunts to perform. Maybe even have boss encounters.
I feel it's a wasted potential, there are no other circus-core vidya I believe (I mean that gameplay actually has to do with stuff you'd do at a circus, not an average platformer with a circus theme.

Circus Charlie is a masterpiece of precision-platforming execution.
It also has SOUL.
A shame most people in the west never got to experience this classic.
