It wasn't emulating anything. You're right that it wasn't called for anything, it was a flavour stat so that mages have a stat they specialize in. It was pretty common, in many games stats were there for flavour or were "used" in a way to make them not completely cosmetic, but overall pointless. In BoF1 Wisdom decreased magic damage when defending and affected some spell hit rates by 12.5%, overall a useless stat but important for game feel.
