Completely forgot about my sister somehow. The SNES was actually originally hers, then she moved onto PS1, PS2, and PSP which she barely played while I got all of the later Nintendo stuff, but I still played tons of PS1 games as well and pretty much own it as well as the SNES now (the PS2 and PSP are still here but I never really got into them as much)

PS1 is a lot better at 3D, they also had Namco, Square, and like ten other third parties on their side. Saturn had arguably a better first party lineup and better ports for the Capcom games, that's about it

It's not even amazing at 2D or anything. Only a handful of Japanese titles even use the 4MB RAM cart, outside of that it doesn't really do anything the PS1 can't do. It lost in the west for some very obvious reasons which becomes more apparent when you play some of the games and compare it

Current favorites are Crash 2, Crash 3, Mega Man X4, and Mega Man X5, though I have yet to play either of the Castlevania games or Klonoa and haven't really done a serious playthrough of any of the Spyro and Rayman games.

Lol. Welcome to /vr/ OP. If you like Silent Hill you might also enjoy the Resident Evil and Parasite Eve games, or Dino Crisis. The first D game is also on PS1. There's also Konami's other very popular game on PS1, Metal Gear Solid. It's less survival horror and more stealth action.

For me, growing up I played a lot of Crash Bandicoot, Mega Man X4/X5, and the Tony Hawk games, as well as some other western titles like Need for Speed III and Powerboat Racing. The PS1 library is nearly endless, you can't really go wrong with any game.

Just use DuckStation or PCSX ReArmed core in RetroArch. Sony style controllers are not hard to find, in fact you can probably just use the PS Classic controller if you're on PC. Worth noting it probably has the largest library of the /vr/-related consoles aside from its successor the PS2. Even distribution of solid 2D and 3D games and basically has a good amount of titles in every genre which can't be said of its contemporaries.

Many consider it the true successor to the SNES which it technically is. There are some nice infographics out there but I don't have them ready at the moment, just tell us what type of games you like and we can recommend some to you.

Crash 2's improvements over it's predecessor has helped it become a successful franchise, bar none. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for Crash 1 because it introduced the series, but Crash 2 is where the series starts to shine. Control and Movement has significantly improved; with the addition of a new slide move, you can perform a long jump to get to those far platforms. Crash's movement in the first game felt kinda klunky, and rigid; however, in the sequel, Crash moves a lot faster, and the controls are well tuned to his movement. Platforming in 2 has also adapted to the movement improvements; one of them was adding a new obstacle: The Nitro Crate (eg. The level "Cold Hard Crash"). While the third game is regarded is the "best" in the series, the jump from Crash 2 -> Crash 3 were mostly Quality of Life updates, compared to the huge overhaul that was its predecessor, and I think that's what made it successful.

It's imo most second games in a series. Especially the ones comming from the west.
Just look at Spyro 2, Crash 2 and R&C 2 and tell me they don't take the idea of the first game and bloat it with lots of crap. And on top of that they are barely fun to replay, a complete fucking torture to go through even once thanks to their terrible game design.
The fact that the third games fixed all of that immediately right after should tell you everything you need to know. I don't understan mainstream taste all the time since my interests are niche, but those second games are the ones that made me scratch my head the most. How are painfull-to-play games always the most popular ones? I don't understand at all.

>collect crystals as a pure formality just to prove you made it to the end of the level, absolutely no challenge involved in finding or collecting the crystal
>they probably only put this in to justify why you could do each warp room's levels in any order
>make it possible to destroy the crystal by spinning into it, forcing you to die or restart

what did they mean by this?

What’s the point of this game? I beat all 5 levels and nothing is happening. What am I not understanding?

I remember being sad and scared of the incoming transition, because I was already immersed in the 2D familiarity/culture of video games. but then reading a few issues of EGM, Gamepro and some other less-known magazines, i noticed the hype with 3DO and Saturn being hot topics. Showcasing the new/developing games blocky dimensions in dark, shaded colors. I'd see screenshots of Alone in the Dark and D which pretty much justified my fear for this upcoming trend.

I did get over it, eventually. I do remember Dire Dire Docks being pretty spooky what with hectically swimming as fast as i could before seeing Mario drown, then there was that eel too. I also remember being scared to play Crash 2 because of Cortex's angry holographic head in the cover's background, then i saw someone play it.
