As someone who dislikes jrpgs I absolutely adore metal max. Here's some basic info.

The famicom game is not worth your time. Returns (sfc remake) is superior in every way. There were plans to translate it but it was dropped when people realized it would be better to just translate the sfc version.

Metal max 2 (sfc) is good but a bit rough. It came out very early in the super famicom's life cycle and it shows. Graphics and sound are kinda primative for the system but I still find it enjoyable.

Metal max returns is what made the series known and for good reason. A remake of the original famicom game, it's very faithful and an improvement in every way. It came out quite late in the system's life cycle and it shows. It looks and sounds amazing and is incredibly charming. This is the game to play.

There are a few other games but they're not retro. I haven't played it myself but metal saga on the ps2 I hear is quite good.
