> level design in the expansion and sequel I seem to remember being a step above the base RR game

And yes, the add-on Route 66 does a great at hiding the flaws of the original game while retaining the good aspects.

The sequel Rides Again fixes most of the flaws of the original, adds tons of cool stuff, and has some amazing level design too. Sadly the first level is probably the worst, but the factory level for instance is some of the most advanced level design I've seen in a pro Build game ever.
They really knew how to come around the limits of the engine.

Also, Rides Again actually has Room Over Room like Blood and Shadow Warrior (it works and looks more like SW's) but somehow few people are even aware of that... It's not often used but when it is it's like a cherry on top of the cake

Huh, just crouch man. It's the same with cultists, crouch and they'll have a harder time hitting you.

Most people fail to realize how much crouching matters in Blood. Some retards even call the crouching mechanics or results from it 'glitches'. In reality Blood was like one of the first FPS I know where crouching really matters, they really put an emphasis on it, and it's even OP to be honest which just shows people weren't used to balancing crouching yet.
Even cultists can crouch, and then if you don't crouch as well, you'll have harder time killing them. I've seen people cry and call this "a glitch"

Bad phrasing, but here they are:
- keys and locked doors. Keys are small, not colourful and hard to see. Also, lthe difference between the several keys goes something like this "locked door" "another locked door" "yet another locked door", so there is no way to tell which key goes with which door. There is also the fact that you're not told when you do use a key, meaning that if you didn't find the locked door first, you don't even know you went through a door that was locked.
- some stupidly hidden switches
- some bad enemy behaviour, including a glitchy dog which animations are off and which delayed bites look like it hits you from miles away. There is the titty alien bitches which can take down your entire health in a SECOND.
- some levels drop the cake in terms of balance, like E2L1

I thought the "old west town" map was the worst one to be honest. It's just a flat "go check every building" map, which was done already in the original game E2L1 and also in about a thousand DN3D usermap.

I've never played Witchaven and I'm curious about it. Is it worth it for someone who's generally not into heroic fantasy stuff like this?

How are levels, Doom-like or Strife-like ?

Pic is more Rides Again.

Powerslave (DOS) version, is very underrated imo. Gameplay isn't very deep, but level design is fantastic.

Redneck Rampage: Rides Again In Arkansas, is also very underrated imo. Most people stop at the first RR game, which is kinda average in many ways, but Rides Again fixes most flaws of the original and has much better level design, they really exploited the Build engine to its maximum.

If you go with Powerslave I have some protips to make controls more comfortable.

imo Exhumed (DOS) and Redneck Rampage Rides Again In Arkansas (the sequel to the first RR) have some of the best level design of any Doom-era FPS

The sewer level isn't that bad. Just use the auto-map if you're lost.

Plus it's one of the most beautiful looking levels at the start of the game.

That factory level is one of the best thing i've seen of any Build game

Don't think you can. Hope you play Rides Again In Arksansas once you're done with Suckin' Grits On Routes 66 ; it's even better, trust me.
