I'd like to add that the randomization for every level is fucking bullshit. There's the crane game that has at least some player input, but still doesn't give the player full control of who they want to play as, but what actual level you play is completely random.
This doesn't have to be a bad thing, there are several games that select levels at random for you, or automatically generates a new one every time, and they usually make it work. The thing this game misses though is that the levels are clearly designed with a progressive difficulty curve, making levels of the first zone considerably easier than those of the last. This means you are constantly on a rollercoaster of easy and hard levels with no rhyme or reason to it.
The only logical reasoning I can think of for doing this is because every zone has five acts, so they probably thought it would be stale looking at the same visuals for five levels in a row, which constant switching of zones fixes, but it doesn't take into account how the actual gameplay is affected by this, so it only ends up being fucking annoying.

What with how fucking common stories about kids stealing games back in the game are, I'd say the ones who wrote their name on their cartridges in permanent markers were the smart ones.
