There's a similar trick in MM2 on Genesis. All of the dungeons are 15x15 grids but there's ONE mid/late game mine where, in order to get the Thing, you have to walk through an illusionary wall and travel outside of the 15x15 map. I think the rewards were the best Ninja and Cleric hireling plus a bunch of gold.

It was impossible to leave the 15x15 grid everywhere else in the game, no clues or hints that this would be different, it was just that one part.
