The remakes graphics just suck honestly. The backgrounds are all great huge jpegs and the environment's pseduo-realistic look clashes something awful with the flat cartoony style of the characters. By comparison the NES version's BGs are all animated and manage to look just as nice while actually looking like it blends in somewhat with the foreground.

Also hate the way most platforms of the remake are all suspended in midair like in this pic:
