Check out the Turrican series, especially Super Turrican I and II for the SNES, and Mega Turrican for the GEN. The other Turrican games are either way too hard (NES Super Turrican; GEN Turrican) or are crappy ports of the Amiga originals (GEN Turrican again, GEN Universal Soldier which was really just a port of Turrican II with the Universal Soldier license slapped on it. Very clever, Accolade...)
