Reddit doesn't 'play' handhelds. They collect handhelds then take pictures to post onto reddit, and those micro handhelds are photogenic.

Are you trying to tell me that Risk of Rain is not SOVL? If so, I do pity you.

That said, I own(ed) more (Chink) handhelds than any of you faggots in this thread and I think a high end phone running Retroarch is simply the most enjoyable way to play these games.

>Pandora
>Wiz
>Dingoo A320
>Hacked PSP, 3DS
>Multiple GBA flashcards
>Multiple NDS flashcards
>Miyoo Mini
>Various Anbernic devices
>GPD Win 1, Micro PC and Max 1
>Self-built GB Pocket Pi Zero Handheld (Gaboze Pocaio)
>Self-built Dreamcast VMU Pi Zero Handheld (Kite's Circuit Gem)
>TinyPi Pro (pic rel)

I even owned the fucking GP2X when it came out and I can still tell you that none of these devices even come close to the raw power, efficiency and convenience a phone gives you. Yes, the early PSP homebrew scene, the early days of the Dingoo and the prime of the Pandora were comfy times but it's fucking 2022, get with the time zoomie.

I think most people had this experience when they discovered it in the 90s or early 2000s. When my cousin showed me Pokemon on his PC I thought it was some sort of fan remake flashgame thing, not the real whole game. What followed was me lurking various ROM sites and forums, playing literally every GBA game the moment it was released and wasting a whole lot of time on shovelware.

>Ergonomics and build quality are also generally better.
While chink handhelds have improved in recent months (especially with regards to ergonomics and the % of shitty batteries), it's obvious that both the n3DS and the Vita have a much better feel to them and I'd chose them over something like the RS97 any day. It's also easier to simply use a device you already have for emulation, which is why phones are so popular to begin with. But the mentality of
>dude lmao just get a hacked a 2DS/3DS/Vita/PSP
if your main goal is emulation and not playing these handheld's native libraries is nothing but a shitty meme.

The best option by far is of course to become a /g/entooman and build your own RBPi cm4 based handheld device on something like the Circuit Sword, with a classic Gameboy casing. It's the true testament to autism but it can run everything up to PSP and Gamecube (albeit not very well) and even play x86 PC indie games via box86.

Pic semi related.

If your manlet hands can't hold a phone with a controller attached, try the TinyPi Pro. Supports GBA with gyro + games up to PSX, has physical buttons and is legit smaller than the Gameboy Micro.

There are various Raspberry Pi handhelds that don't require you to destroy original hardware. Even those based on Gameboy / Gameboy Pocket can be used with aftermarket shells.
