Not that anon, I'm sorry but no lol. Sonic Jam would've been a better choice here. I will say I do prefer SSFII and SSFIIT on Saturn over SFIIT on SNES for obvious reasons.

Hard to tell from that pic but the cartridges were actually enormous on it. It does look nice though

The game is evenly balanced, so the zone order is basically
>Fast -> Slow -> Fast -> Slow -> Fast -> Slow
Vs. Sonic 2 which is more like...
>Fast -> Fast -> Fast -> Slow -> Slow -> Slow -> Mixed -> Mixed -> Autoscroller -> Slow
Sonic CD also follows a similar pattern to Sonic 1, albeit still faster overall

If you want something closer to Mario, try Sonic 1 on the Game Gear. If you want more speed which it sounds like, try the Advance series, particularly Advance 2.

Truth is there are many different kinds of Sonic games, sometimes you just have to find the one for you

I think with Heroes they really wanted to go with a younger audience, you could also see this in SA:DX with the random Sonic X posters all over the place as well as the Advance games, particularly 2 which introduced Cream. With Shadow you could tell they really wanted to go back to the style of SA2 and make it darker, but I guess Heroes was so kiddie that it came off as jarring. You are right about it being the same staff though

Because the enemies in SA2 were made by GUN, not Eggman. So there aren't really any actual badniks in the game outside of the E-102 and Chaos clones in the later stages + Green Hill Zone. Heroes has Egg Pawns, but that game is arguably even more kiddie. You might prefer SA1 as the enemies and environments are a little more varied.

It's not any more retarded than Batman, Spider-Man, or the average anime. It is interesting that you mention the comics though, I don't think it's nearly as bad as some of the Penders issues.

Dark Age as far as I'm concerned was the "Saturn Era" when we got no Sonic games at all, though when most people use this term I realize they are referring to Sonic 2006 primarily and I guess everything up to Black Knight? But that still doesn't include SA2, which came before even the shift to third-party. And interestingly enough both Unleashed and Black Knight are generally praised for their story and not being too silly or too serious. I guess if I had to give one criticism, it's that some of the cutscenes might be a little wonky due to how the translation was handled? But it still seems fine to me.

The films are honestly sick, I can't wait for Sonic 3 as well

SEGA during the hardware era was a very different company. The Chao Garden was actually the direct result of Sonic Team wanting to do something cool with the console's VMU feature. If you like SA1, you might like Heroes. It's less open, but has the same fun colorful vibe, plus it's one of the last games to feature Big the Cat. The Advance series and Sonic Pocket Adventure also carry this tone.

If you like SA2, I recommend playing Shadow's game. It's basically a tribute to SA2 with remixed music and stages. The guns aren't really that different from the ones in E-102's stages or the mech stages in SA2. Plus, there is no emerald hunting.

>>10695635
This post starts out good but almost everything after the first greentext is false. STI wasn't even a thing after the Saturn and Shadow's game literally exists because of how popular he was in SA2.

Mario, Mega Man, Street Fighter, and DarkStalkers literally all had American cartoons. The difference is Sonic's western material (primarily the comics) were actually successful. There are people who literally only know and care about Sonic because of the comics to this day. Maybe spend more time in /co/ or /vg/ and you will see this.

You are missing Sonic, Yoshi, Kirby, Metroid, Castlevania, Wario Land, etc. I would try some of those before getting into the more obscure ones. Mario and Mega Man alone have tons of other titles.

Possibly after you play Sonic and a few other Genesis games you can try >>10643652

Not OP but I'll bite. Special Stages are annoying, game starts out great but starts to drag on immediately after Casino Night Zone, or even after Chemical Plant if you have a short attention span. The final boss is also a pain in the behind. Soundtrack is obviously inferior but that only happened because they were too intimidated to put it on SEGA CD like originally planned.

The most common complaint I've heard for Sonic 3&K is that the levels are too long, in regards to 3 I think they're fine but I do remember Sandopolis and Lava Reef being abnormally long the last time I played, though it's been a while.

I like all of the Genesis games, but they all have their weird little quirks (in the case of CD it's primarily Wacky Workbench and the Time Travel system, in Sonic 1's case it's Marble and Labyrinth Zone, etc). Usually it's just a matter of preference, though in my case I also prefer the actual SEGA CD hardware over standard Genesis, would have been great if it got another Sonic game.

>SEGA CD is quite dope, what titles do you like in it?
Sonic CD
The Terminator
Starblade
Road Rash
Keio Flying Squadron
Lords of Thunder
Android Assault: Revenge of Bari-Arm
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure
After Burner III
Silpheed

I only started getting into it about two years ago, the same time I started playing TurboGrafx-CD. It quickly became my favorite platform but lately I've only really been playing my Famiclone handhelds instead

Sony is pretty different. You can see it in their marketing and their games. Much more focus on story and cinematic stuff vs. SEGA's more arcadey style. Microsoft is probably closer especially the original Xbox and the 360) but still not quite the same. I will say though I prefer SEGA over any of the current contenders.

Outside of Power Drift (which strangely never got a Genesis port), it's okay I guess. I've heard some people prefer the PCE version of OutRun. Gain Ground is alright, the Golden Axe port sounds great but has a few issues. I haven't yet played After Burner but there is no way it's better than the 32X port which is phenomenal

The SMS games are completely different, iirc most of them are by Ancient (Yuzo Koshiro's team). They tend to have more puzzle platforming and more challenge. There is also no 3K on SMS, but Game Gear does have Triple Trouble. You may also like Sonic CD or Sonic R if you haven't played them yet

>The Mega Everdrive (the latest model, maybe some earlier ones too) flashcart has a feature to emulate the Master System adapter for the Mega Drive (and thus play MS roms), and has a weird experimental NES emulator as well (very iffy compatibility though).
I completely forgot about this, OP could just buy a Genesis instead of both Genesis and SMS. If he wants to play og carts there's also the Power Base Converter which is cheaper than buying a whole SMS console.

You don't have to actually find the capsules and projectors if you just go for the Time Stones. Sometimes it is hard to find 50 rings though, especially in the first few stages

>>10179284
As the story goes, it was originally meant to be a SEGA CD game before the project was split in two. Stuff like Wood Zone and Rock Zone would've been basically the equivalent of Emerald Hill Zone Past and Metropolis Zone Past. I also remember reading somewhere that Hidden Palace Zone was supposed to be a cutscene where Sonic turns Super, kind of like in Sonic 3K.
