I don't hate this pad by any means, but I also think its importance to the N64 experience is a little overstated by the hardcore fans.

>There's no other way to play Mario 64! The sensitivity of Mario's movement is all wrong on a normal stick!
It controls perfectly with any other stick, I've done 120 stars many times with various controllers over the years and Kaze autists don't use N64 sticks.
>Sin & Punishment doesn't work with other controllers!
I love what Treasure did with that game's control scheme, but I've beaten S&P multiple times on Hard with a conventional controller by binding movement to the Dpad, aiming on the right stick, jumping on the bumpers and shooting on the right trigger. No issues at all.
>The right stick is unusable for the C-buttons in Zelda!
A little more cumbersome, sure, but hardly the huge deal that some 64 fans like to claim. I had no problem doing all the shooting minigames in Majora's Mask with the right stick.

The only real one I can think of is precise aiming in Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, where the N64's thin stick and large range of movement does feel a bit better using a modern stick. And yet I've still beaten both on 00 Agent and Perfect Agent with a DS4.

Looking back, how did Nintendo not get sued for this controller? Ergonomically I think it's great and I actually really liked the three-pronged design, but the analog stick seems like it was designed to fail. Couple that with some games that seem like they're just a gamified version of destroying your stick as quickly as possible (Smash Bros. and Mario Party specifically) and it's kind of baffling they got away with continuing to sell these with such a critical design flaw. It makes the Joycon stick drift issue look trivial in comparison.

This controller has suffered the worst out of all retro controllers in the modern age going foward.
>Tiny as fuck to hold for adults
>Replicas/3rd party alternatives have poor to inaccurate stick ranges
>Replacable stick parts are hit or miss, still prone to ware and tear over time
>High quality stick parts that fix the stick grinding are so rare they moght as well be non-existent and have to bow down to scalper prices

What the fuck? I just learned how the N64 controller's analog stick works.

>Two wheels are positioned at right angles to each other below the joystick. Whenever the joystick is moved, the two wheels turn slightly. Tiny slots are arranged around the perimeter of each wheel. The wheels are each mounted between an LED (Light Emitting Diode) and a photo cell. Light from the LED, shining through the slots in the wheel on the cell, creates a small amount of current. When the amount of light changes, the level of current changes. By monitoring the output of each photo cell, the N64 can determine the exact angle at which the joystick is being held, and trigger the appropriate response.

Isn't this overcomplicated and overdesigned?
Anyone here a N64 autist who knows why they made it like this?

Why do people hate this controller so much? Once you realise it's three grips are intentionally supposed to be held in certain ways to play certain games it plays fine.

Slightly related. What's the best way to get an N64 controller to work with a wii for n64 emulation?

Is there a way to do it?

i doubt this will get any attention but im gonna try
hello /vr/tards im searching for this weird racing game on nintendo 64
>had realistic cars and you went through real locations
>pretty sure the objective wasnt to race but to instead destroy all the other cars
>all of the stages were open-world so you could go wherever you felt like
>in one of the maps you could find a crater with a meteor on it and if you waited there for a while a sudden giant ant would chase you and the other cars
i really hope this gets some sort of attention

I'm trying to play an OOT romhack in retroarch, but the default control scheme is some retarded modifier bullshit where you have to hold down a trigger to use the c buttons. I'm playing it on an Xbox controller, and I want to map
> Y = C-left
> B = C-down
> RB = C-right
> LB = C-up
but I can't get it to work. Even after I try to set the C axes it doesn't work right. Is there any known fix for this?

Also, retroarch hate thread. How can this program be so useful and necessary, yet have such a flaming trash fire of a UI?

Managed to acquire one of these with a 9/10 analog stick (genuinely feels kind of odd after all these years with my worn-out OG sticks or cheapo third-party shite).

Any advice on keeping these in decent condition for as long as possible (aside from no Mario Party)? To be desu, I’m even wary of subjecting it to Bomberman.
