>This. I can't speak for Japan but in the US the Nintendo was a phenomenon of its own.
In japan, the Famicom caused a boom. It can still be perceived today, no other system gets as much nostalgia as the Famicom by japanese society.
I remember reading in an interview with Itoi while he was making Mother 2, and that he wanted that "famicom boom" to be back, and uses his own older sister as an example, she used to play Famicom, but by the 90s she stopped playing, he said he made Mother 2 with that in mind, and that's also why the slogan says "kids, adults, even older sisters".

>Before 90s it feels really bland. Am I wrong?
Actually yes, there are a lot of classic arcade games from the 80s that are worth playing, from Space Invaders and Pac-Man to OutRun and Space Harrier, among many other.
Also, late 80s console games are pretty damn good, Famicom alone is a goldmine.

No, maybe it's because I grew up with a Famiclone (that looked exactly like the japanese Famicom), but when I first saw the NES I thought it was bulky for no reason. My friend was like "I have the Nintendo! the original!" and when I went to his house and saw his sister playing SMB3, I didn't even notice a difference with my good ol' Family Game, and wondered why it needed to be so big compared to my cute little machine that could play the same games.
Later I learned that my console was a bootleg, etc. I still have a warm spot for it (and its many bootleg games) on my heart.

I do prefer the original NES over the top loader though.

I think retro should be 4th gen and before, but I'm fine with 5th gen and DC I guess, although I don't consider them retro.
PS2 and onwards would be definitely not retro at all.
