It's certainly no where near as good as it once was, but it's still a lot better than many Western countries for most things. Visited Japan many times over the last 15 years, and it's only gotten steadily more expensive. Looking back it was insane how good the deals once were, picked up things like the Tales of Symphonia GameCube complete in box (pic related) for about ¥6000 from a Book Off in Akihabara of all places in 2011.

I'm going back again this month, and will be having one "last hurrah" dedicating a couple of days to my trip hitting up 10-15 thrift stores. The prices are probably going to be as bad as OP says in the next year or two. It's not original, but the best advice to any anons going to Japan looking for retro vidya is this:
Specialty retro game stores like Super Potato are aware of what foreigners will pay, and jack the prices up accordingly. Get as far away from Tokyo as you possibly can, and go to second hand stores (e.g. Hard-Off), and pray you find something you like.
