Sure, a relatively weak one. A fridge magnet should be good. Just no giant horseshoe magnets or speakers or anything.

Though the only place you'll see any change from something like foil is between the yoke and the tube itself, in the narrow gap between tube surface and the bottom of the yoke. In that pic, the only metal part of the convergence strips were at the very bottom of the strips, not visible because they were covered by the yoke.

You can get stuff wedged in there and fuck things up so that you HAVE to take off the yoke, which is what happened in my case, so you may want to try the magnet first.

I got a part of a deflection strip stuck inside the deflection yoke and it was fucking up convergence worse than the problem I'd been attempting to fix. The metal part came off of the paper strip. The only way I could pull it out of the yoke was by taking the yoke clean off.

Pictured: the metal tab that messed it all up.

Since I'd already taken the yoke off and would have to put it back on just right anyway, and I had a pre-existing convergence problem I'd been trying to fix, I took that opportunity to figure out how it all worked and ended up with a nicer picture than I'd started with before I'd started mucking with convergence strips. You can fix color purity and convergence issues with the yoke and also the purity rings around the neck. Try the rings first, though.

In yellow, the little shit that caused my convergence issue. Convergence strips are helpful for fine tuning convergence at the corners of tubes after placing the yoke, but the adhesive came off this one while I was moving it around and it got stuck inside the yoke. This is why I took it apart.
