Aside from the Virtual Boy, I agree. I really would have liked to see the Mario games go further in the direction of Land 2, which remains my favorite 2D Mario to this day.

Mario Land 2 is my favorite 2D Mario game. I don't even like the others that much (more of a Mega Man/Donkey Kong guy). But Land 2 is great.
