The original English translation has a lot of flaws. First, the character limit. In the original, a lot of names had to be shortened to fit the Japanese character limit, and some of them become outright confusing or tough to keep track of and remember. Items, like Snper, Antdt, SprRib, Mckrl, etc. Or a plant character having their clever pun name of "Aspara" changed to "Spar." Or a forest dwelling axe man having their name "Bunyan" get changed to "Baba." It removes a lot of the charm and personality behind some of the names and causes them to feel generic or weightless.

Second, the translation was done by Capcom themselves. Breath of Fire 1 had it's translation done by Square and even then it was sloppy. If you can imagine how notorious Capcom was in the 90s for bizarre translation (Street Fighter 2's "You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance") then try imagining that but for a text heavy RPG like Breath of Fire 2. There's tons of errors. Typos, wrong characters speaking, characters addressing the wrong character, and a literal Yes / No question box that has the choices flipped as No / Yes.
