That thread is dead now but I actually saw someone mention that Ranger didn't have an official name until Quake III. I could've swore that he was called Ranger in the Quake 1 manual and so I looked into it and I'll be damned if that anon wasn't correct. Shows how there was even LESS lore for Quake 1 than it appears.

Here is an interesting piece that illustrates this. John Romero made a Quake 20th anniversary post on his official website (highly recommended, lined below) and one of the things he shared was a fan made Quake set of collectible trading cards. The one featuring the then unnamed Ranger simply says "Hero".

So the fans didn't even have a fucking name to call him (I suppose the same could be said for Doomguy though) on top of having the briefest and most vague of backstories/lore.
